Title | Cosmology with gravitational-wave observations of compact binaries |
Details | The binary neutron star GW170817 with its coincident optical counterpart led to a first "standard siren" measurement of the Hubble constant independent of the cosmological distance ladder. The binary black holes without counterparts slightly improve this measurement by using galaxy catalogues for redshift, following an approach outlined by Schutz. In this talk we describe how compact binaries observed in gravitational waves are standard distance indicators, report the latest results of the gravitational-wave measurement of the Hubble constant by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration and discuss the prospects of gravitational-wave cosmology over the coming years.
